Phantom Menace

“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” has been regarded as the one of the worst “Star Wars” films. So why would you want to see it again in 3-D? To answer that question quite simply, not everyone should see it again. “Episode I” begins the saga of young Anakin Skywalker’s journey as an innocent slave with the potential to bring balance to the force, then follows his eventual tragic downfall. We are introduced to classic characters (such as Obi-Wan, C-3PO, and R2-D2) along with contemporary favorites and failures (such as Darth Maul, Queen Amidala, and Jar Jar Binks).

There have only been a few minor changes to the original movie itself, aside from the 3-D treatment. For instance, there is an extended Pod Racing sequence and Yoda is given a CGI makeover, unlike his former puppet self. But the real story here is the 3-D, which was done quite well. It added depth and crispness to the scenes without being annoying or too “in your face.” Just don’t expect to see a light saber nearly cut off your nose or a spaceship fly at your face, since the movie was not initially shot in 3-D. The small effects that were added provide a nice touch and make the 13 year-old movie seem shiny and new again.

If you are a “Star Wars” fan and don’t mind seeing Jar Jar again, then this is a must see. If you are not a big fan, and if you already saw the original back in 1999, then you might want to save your fourteen bucks. The dialogue and acting is still quite cheesy and it is one of the weaker entries in the saga. Even if you’re an overcritical fan like me, you tend to forgive Lucas on any shortcomings once you see the cool space explosions and aliens fighting a war on a far off planet. If this is your first time viewing this particular “Star Wars” movie, or if you want to introduce a new generation of kid’s to the “Star Wars” universe, then this would make an exciting and magical night out.

Glad to hear its still going strong. I don't know about bringing dead characters back from the dead when we clearly saw their never-to-come-back deaths, although I can believe Boba Fett can come back. I watched a couple of the earlier seasons, I think I'll catch a couple episodes of this one to see how these characters are brought back.
