Time for these babies to be bought!
Oscar season is officially upon us! The 85th annual Academy Award nominees were announced this morning, and with them came some shocking snubs and surprises. Leading the pack with 12 nominations is Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, followed by Life of Pi with 11, and Silver Linings Playbook and Les Miserables with 8 nominations each. Argo, which just a day earlier was one of the sure frontrunners for Best Picture, took a big blow to its chances this morning when Ben Affleck received no Best Director nomination -- same goes for Kathryn Bigelow for her harrowing thriller Zero Dark Thirty.
David O. Russell’s charming romantic comedy, “Silver Linings Playbook,” surprised by being the first film to be nominated in all acting categories since Warren Beatty’s “Reds” in 1981.
Another shocker came with “Amour,” which racked up 5 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Foreign Film, and Best Actress for 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, the oldest nominee ever. On the flip side, she’s nominated beside the now youngest nominee in the history of the Oscars: 9- year-old Quvenzhané Wallis for the fantastical Beasts of the Southern Wild (who was actually 6 at the time of filming). “Beasts” also got nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
At this point, my money’s on “Lincoln”; it’s one of the only films to get a directing nod from both the Directors Guild Awards and the Oscars (same goes for Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi”), it topped the BAFTA nominations, and it also surpassed most everyone’s expectations by grossing a whopping $145 million at the box office.
No matter what (or who) you think is going to win, one thing’s for certain: This is going to be one hell of an Oscar race!

... I am surprised that Anna Karenina did not get a Best Picture nomination and that Jamie Fox nor Leonardo DiCaprio were recognized for their redoubtable roles in Django Unchained. |

... Zero Dark Thirty was a dragged on movie and I feel it shouldn't be best picture. The story is great but why did they have to stretch it out so long...half the theatre was sleep at the screening |

... I felt that it was unfortunate that Tom Hooper was not nominated for his film version of Les Miserables. I thought that he made some very original choices during production; on top of the fact that producing movie musicals is already not an easy task. Perhaps the Academy felt his previous win nixed him from consideration. |

... I think Tom Hooper should have been nominated for Les Miserables. My sister saw the play and told me about it, so when the movie came out I was excited to see it. The movie was just as good as she described!!! He should have been nominated |

... I'm surprised The Hobbit didn't get nominated for best picture. It didn't so much deserve a nomination, as I just expected it to. |

... Kathryn Bigelow - best director, Ben Affleck - best director and best actor, Leonardo DiCaprio - best director. What the f@#k academy? I'd skip the award ceremony this year if I wasn't such a huge fan of the host. |

... I am surprised that Ben Afflect did not get the director nomination for Argo & Wes Anderson for Moonrise Kingdom and Bill Murray didn't get a best actor as his Role of FDR in Hyde Park on the Hudson. . he also should have gotten best supporting actor for Moonrise Kingdom, as should have Frances McDormitt |

... Skyfall should have definitely have gotten a nomination for Best Picture. It was one of the best movies this year and the best Bond movie in recent memory. At the very least, should have gotten recognition by getting nominated |

... I would say 007: Skyfall should have recieved some kind of nomination or mention. Django as well but it came out at the very last moments of the year that it might be pushed to 2013 nominations. |

... I am more than surprised that Leonardo DiCaprio did not get chosen for Django Unchained. He was played his part very well and deserves to be recognized. I understand that it came out very close to the end of 2012, but it was still a good movie that had fabulous acting in it. |

... I agree that Leonardo DiCaprio had an amazing performance for Django Unchained. Quentin Tarrantino wrote the script and brought about his proactive personality with this movie, to say the least, which proved to be a great movie. Batman was well done as well. |

... I think Tom Hooper should have been nominated for Les Miserables. I saw the play for the very first time. It was great! And when the movie came out I was so excited to see it because the movie was just as high-quality as the play!!! This is why I feel he should have been nominated. |

... I will forever be angry for John Hawkes not getting a well deserved nomination for the best film of 2012, The Sessions. Frankly, I preferred him over DDL. |
