It looks like a promising weekend at the movies with a movie to fit most everyone's taste. The star power of Daniel Radcliffe fueled the interest in "The Woman in Black" but it quickly ran out of gas as "Chronicle" and "Big Miracle" both made better efforts to get noticed. "Chronicle's" leap off faith in New York City took the cake while "Big Miracle" attracted its target market by shining light on some deserving recipients.
"The Woman in Black" is Daniel Radcliffe's first major release since the close of the Harry Potter run that has occupied his life since childhood. It's also his first movie not powered by a multi-million dollar campaign and the notoriety of the source material. Aside from a "See What They See" display in the theaters I didn't hear much buzz until this week when most of the screenings hit. The "See What They See" display which most of you have seen in theaters never seemed to work in any of the theaters I found. It appears to be a mirror that you look into and presumably something spooky shows up. All I saw was a dim reflection and a bunch of nose prints from other people trying to get it to work. It was clearly plugged in at each location, maybe it needed to be turned on? At any rate it didn't work and that doesn't say much for the film's promotion.
"Big Miracle" presents a good cause this weekend tugging at heart strings of animal rights with a moving story about some whales stuck in the ice in Alaska and a bunch of crazy people risking their lives to cut out a whale highway to get them out to sea. As jaded as my description sounds it looks like a pretty good sappy movie that I wouldn't mind seeing and their Teen Impact Contest with the Huffington Post to highlight local teens bringing their communities together flows very well with the movie's storyline. They did a great job keeping their promotions targeted and in a positive light which is an accomplishment as many movie promotions like this end up more like charity cases than actual promotions."Chronicle" took to the skies of New York city with one of the boldest stunts in the past 12 months. In a pretty kickass promotion they build radio-controlled planes shaped like humans and flew them around the skies of New York, causing quite a stir and making national news. I can't think of a better way to promote a movie about high school kids with super powers than to make the general public think there's a bunch of super heroes in the sky flying around like something out of a comic book. More information on the stunt and a video can be found in this article.
The grades for this week are pretty clear: "Chronicle" - A, "Big Miracle" - B, and a "C" for "The Woman in Black" simply for participation. I can't wait to see "Chronicle" this week as I can only hope there were as creative with the movie as they were with the promotions.
Till next week, you hit the movies while I figure out what put you there.

... I actually want to see this movie. Though it may look lame or have a weak story line, the idea of super humans really intrigue me. What do you guys think? |

... I agree with your review of Chronicle. Such a lame movie, if you want to call it a movie. The previews/trailer was the best part of the film which would have been only 10 minutes tops. They really need to go back to drawing board on this one. |
