The 3D resurgence that started in 2009 with James Cameron’s Avatar looked as if it was going to die sometime in 2011. After a dismal year 2010 of 3D films, in which the gimmick was pointless at best or at worst, made the film look dark and muddled, audiences seemed to get increasingly more and more fed up with paying an extra $3 to $4 to wear glasses and see a dimmer picture.

However, instead of backing away from the trend, Hollywood is going to see how far they can push it. I don’t have high hopes, but if there is one man who can make an innovative, great-looking 3D film, it’s Martin Scorsese. His first 3D film, “Hugo Cabaret,” about an orphan in 1930s Paris who lives in a train station, is slated to open on November 23, 2011. Details on the film can be found at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970179/

While the opening date is nine months away, it will be interesting to keep track of the buzz around the test screenings to see whether Scorsese has in fact pulled it off or fallen in with the rest of the Hollywood ilk who seem to purposely be trying to “win” the new Razzie category of “Most Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3D.”
