The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Starring: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Sven-Bertil Taube. Not Rated, but would certainly be an R.
The movie: An elderly billionaire (Taube) hires a disgraced journalist named Mikael (Nyqvist) to investigate the disappearance of his niece 40 years earlier. With the help of a computer hacker named Lisbeth (Rapace), Mikael uncovers much more than he bargained for. The murder-mystery storyline is intense and compelling, but at 152 minutes director Niels Oplev needs to trim the subplots to allow for an even more gripping pace. Rent It.
Brooklyn’s Finest
Starring: Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke. Rated R.
The movie: Three Brooklyn cops – one in uniform (Gere), one undercover (Cheadle) and one a narc (Hawke) – share a mutual disregard for the law when it comes to what they believe is right and wrong. Although the three plotlines rarely intersect, the compelling story from “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua is one of the best cop dramas in quite some time. Rent It.
A Single Man
Starring: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult. Rated R.
The movie: Distraught over the loss of his boyfriend (Matthew Goode), George (Firth) contemplates suicide while seeking comfort in an old friend (Moore) and one of his students (Hoult). The performances are top-notch, especially Firth, and this is a strong directing debut from fashion designer Tom Ford. Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood. Buy It.
