It’s Complicated
Starring: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin. Rated R.
The movie: Jane (Streep) has been divorced from Jake (Baldwin) for 10 years and just recently settled in and found happiness. Complications ensue, however, when she develops feelings for a nice-guy architect (Martin) while having an affair with Jake, who remarried a younger woman (Lake Bell). Writer/director Nancy Meyers (“Something’s Gotta Give”) has cornered the market on adult romantic comedy, and thankfully she does it well. The characters are engaging and likeable, and the story is fun too follow without getting too heavy-handed. Rent It.
Armageddon
Starring: Bruce Willis, Ben Afflect, Liv Tyler. Rated PG-13.
The movie: With an asteroid the size of Texas set to destroy Earth, NASA sends the best oil drilling team in the world led by Harry Stamper (Willis) to land on the asteroid, detonate a nuclear bomb and hopefully save humanity. Everything about this Michael Bay ("Transformers") film is absurd (surprise #1: J.J. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay), and yet it's deliriously fun to watch. In all sincerity, this may be the best bad movie ever made (surprise #2: It was nominated for four Oscars, winning none), and it's been a guilty pleasure of mine since its release in 1998. The newly released Blu-Ray includes nothing new (trailers and Aerosmith music video "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"), but if you don't have it on DVD or you know you want an upgrade, Buy It.

... Saw "It's Complicated" and thought it was great. Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin had awesome chemistry. Wish they would make more adult romantic comedies. |
