The Princess and the Frog
Starring: Voices of Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Oprah Winfrey. Rated G.
The movie: A classic fairy tale gets a fresh twist in Jazz-Age New Orleans when a woman (Rose) believes kissing the prince (Campos) who's turned into a frog will make her a princess and give her the money she needs to open a restaurant. But when the plan backfires and she turns into a frog as well, they must join together to get back to their human forms. This is traditional (2-D) animation from Disney, and it's a reminder of how good classic animation can be. The songs are great, the story is delightful, and the end result is an upbeat and energetic film that's a great deal of fun. Buy It.
Astro Boy
Starring: Voices of Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Nathan Lane Rated PG.
The movie: After a horrific laboratory accident, Dr. Tenma (voice of Cage) recreates his son as Astro Boy (voice of Highmore), a robot who will soon be called upon to save the day. Everything is mediocre in this pedestrian animated effort, though the voice cast does its best to make it work. Boys ages 6-12 may enjoy it, but that’s all. Rent It.
Did You Hear About The Morgans?
Starring: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott. Rated PG-13.
The movie: On a date to “celebrate” the three-month anniversary of their separation, married New Yorkers Paul (Grant) and Meryl (Parker) witness a murder and are forced to enter the Witness Relocation Program. They’re then shipped to Wyoming, where their city-slicker ways are frowned upon. Grant has some funny one-liners, but the rest is bland and boring. Skip It.
