Ryan Gosling continues his awesome streak of 2011 with “The Ides of March” coming out this week. In it, Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, an idealistic press secretary caught in the middle of a dirty political scandal. And with a supporting cast that includes George Clooney, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most acclaimed and electrifying films of the year. Buy It.
“Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star” stars comedian Nick Swardson as a young man who finds out that his parents were once adult film stars. He then gets the bright idea that it’s his calling to be a part of the adult film industry. Given that this ranked as the worst film of the year for several people on the staff here at Hudak on Hollywood, I’m going to say Skip It.
Screenwriting is not easy. Just ask Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage). In “Adaptation,” who’s having a very difficult time adapting Susan Orlean’s (Meryl Steeep ) book “The Orchid Thief.” Luckily, his twin brother and aspiring screenwriter Donald (also played by Cage) is there to help him out by adding formulaic action cliches to the story. “Adaptation” is more than just a tale about a screenwriter’s journey, it’s a commentary on screenwriting and the whole film industry. It’s also sad, funny, and beautifully told. Buy It.
Also out this week: “Good Morning Vietnam (25th Anniversary Edition),” with Robin Williams as Army radio deejay Adrian Cronauer; “The Josephine Baker Story,” with Lynn Whitfield playing the famous exotic dancer; “Nothing in Common,” with Tom Hanks as an advertising executive coping with his parents’ (played by Jackie Gleason and Eva Marie Saint) divorce; and two films starring Laurence Fishburne: “Thurgood,” a filmed version of Fishburne’s one man play, and “The Tuskegee Airmen,” about the first squadron of African American pilots allowed to serve in World War II.
