Is it worth $10? No
Dumb people do dumb things. It’s a fact of life. But when dumb people do dumb things and $370 million is at stake, it’s just sad. And when they do it in an unfunny, painful-to-watch comedy, it’s even worse.
Kevin (Bow Wow) is a good guy, but he’s surrounded by Neanderthals. So when he wins the Mondo Millions jackpot of $370 million, everyone in his small urban town wants to be his best friend. Local slut Nikki (Teairra Mari) is at least honest about her gold-digging aspirations, but everyone from the town bully (Gbenga Akinnagbe) to the local reverend (Mike Epps) wants nothing more than lavish riches. Stupidly, in order to take Nikki on a date Kevin gets a $100,000 advance from a loan shark (Keith David), then proceeds to blow all of it in a montage that plays like a rap video. Thankfully Kevin’s friends Benny (Brandon T. Jackson) and Stacie (Naturi Naughton) are there to look out for him, though of course he questions their motivations as well.
The sad thing is that “Lottery Ticket” has a fun premise, but is so full of primitive greed that it becomes a nearly unwatchable exercise of urban stupidity. Sure the desire for money is expected, but the desperation it inspires in most people, and the way director Erik White’s film abuses African-American stereotypes while depicting that desperation, is plain ugly.
If the movie were more ambitious about human nature and discussing what the prospect of money does to people it would be more tolerable, but the jokes are so forced and unfunny that nothing else can register. Make no mistake: This “Lottery Ticket” is a loser.
