When a hermitic old coot Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) wants to attend his own funeral to hear what people say about him, he hires Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) and his struggling funeral parlor to make the arrangements. There are subplots as well, including Felix's relationship with Mattie (Sissy Spacek), which leads to a nice revelation in the end. Unfortunately, much of Felix and Mattie's time together is slow and uninteresting, and lacks the quirkiness of the funeral planning. It's relevant, but there's too much of it. Nonetheless, nice performances from Duvall and Murray lend gravitas and humor, respectively, to the moving and effective story.
