Is it worth $10? No
A night out with your significant other, sans the kids and chaos of work, can be a nice bonding experience for a couple that doesn’t always have time to spend together. But even these evenings can become humdrum, so it can be prudent to spice things. You just probably don’t want to go as far as Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) Foster, who against their will find themselves the target of a mafia boss after a case of mistaken identity.
The movie from director Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) is funnier than the unfunny trailer makes it appear. Carell and Fey are likeable as the Fosters, and we’re happy to root for them even though we know they’re not in any real danger. The story structure is episodic, meaning first they go to a security expert (Mark Wahlberg, shirtless and hunky) for help, which leads them to a couple of stoners (James Franco and Mila Kunis), and then mix in a few action scenes and other misunderstandings for good measure.
It’s not terrible, but the laughs don’t come frequently enough to make it worth recommending. This is good entertainment during a “nothing else is on” night at home, but it’s not worth the expense of seeing it on the big screen.
