Is it worth $10? No
Everyone in the Rizzo household has secrets, and because no one communicates in this strong-minded Italian home everyone moves in different directions. In “City Island,” as in life, these things happen when the parents have been married 20-plus years, the daughter is away at college and the rebellious teenage son is, well, rebellious.
But this week daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) is home from school, so corrections officer patriarch Vince (Andy Garcia; Dominik is his daughter) wants his wife (Julianna Margulies) to make a nice dinner to mark the occasion. What he doesn’t tell the family is that he’s brought an ex-con (Steven Strait) whom he believes is his long-lost son home to live with them.
The premise from writer/director Raymond De Felitta is difficult to believe, and with so many characters hiding secrets it becomes a bit tiresome to watch. Worse, De Felitta never decides whether it’s a comedy or drama, and whatever it’s supposed to be it doesn’t work. Still, good performances from Garcia and Margulies allow the movie to get better as it goes, and there are some genuinely amusing moments that hold things together.
