Is it worth $10? Yes
Distraught over the loss of his boyfriend (Matthew Goode), a college professor named George (Colin Firth) in early '60s Los Angeles contemplates suicide while seeking comfort in an old friend (Julianne Moore) and one of his students (Nicholas Hoult). The performances are top-notch, especially Firth, and this is a strong directing debut from fashion designer Tom Ford. That said, Ford occasionally goes to far with his use of light and color to note George's happy times with his former boyfriend and his sullen present. Using the same visual flair to reflect mood once or twice is brilliant; doing it repeatedly is showing off and amateur. Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood.
