The Back-Up Plan

The Back-Up Plan -- Jennifer Lopez, Alex O’Loughlin, Michaela Watkins. Rated PG-13.

When an aging single woman (Lopez) meets Mr. Right (O’Loughlin) on the day she’s artificially inseminated, their relationship follows an unusual trajectory. The movie deserves credit for taking an original approach to a romantic comedy, but even a nice performance from Lopez doesn’t make the movie funny enough to fulfill its promise. Rent It.

City Island -- Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Steven Strait. Rated PG-13.

Everyone in the Rizzo household has secrets, especially patriarch Vince (Garcia), a corrections officer who brings an ex-con (Strait) home to live with his family and is taking acting classes. It’s not a bad movie, but the premise is difficult to believe and writer/director Raymond De Felitta can never decide whether it’s a comedy or drama. Whatever it’s supposed to be, it doesn’t work as either. Still, good performances from Garcia and Margulies allow the movie to get better as it goes. Rent It.

Lost: The Complete Sixth Season and The Complete Collection -- Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway, Terry O'Quinn. Rated TV14.

The legend, the mythology and the confusion of "Lost" can now be debated upon to no end with the release of "Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season" on DVD/Blu-Ray. And if you've avoided buying the other seasons individually but are curious to catch up with the entire series, "Lost: The Complete Collection" is also available in DVD/Blu-Ray with every episode from all six seasons and 30 hours of bonus material.

Notable among the extras on both home video sets is "The New Man In Charge," a 12-minute look at Ben and Hurley in charge of the island. Oddly, none of it takes place on the island (except for a video we watch featuring Dr. Chang), but it does offer the following nuggets: We learn more about the Dharma Hydra Station, why the polar bears where there, why women can't get pregnant on the island, and who is going to be the next leader of the island. It's fascinating and fun, but too brief: "Lost" fans aren't used to getting this much information in a short amount of time, so naturally we wish there was more!

I've seen every episode of the show, and although it had its ups and downs I can say when the show was at its peak there was nothing better. The down shows and seasons may feel bewildering now, but the end result was captivating television that got us to think, feel and imagine endless possibilities. "The Complete Sixth Season" and/or "The Complete Collection" are must-haves for true "Lost" fans, but casual fans will be happy to Rent It.
