Kick-Ass -- Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz. Rated R.
With a profound sense of justice and zero fighting skills, high school geek Dave (Johnson) becomes Kick-Ass, an ordinary man’s superhero. Thankfully, the similarly minded but far more capable Big Daddy (Cage) and Hit-Girl (Moretz) are there to help him take down a Mafioso (Mark Strong) and his nerdy son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Endlessly creative, gleefully hyper-violent and laugh-out-loud funny, this ode to comic books is one of the most enjoyable movies in quite some time. It’s also an instant classic. Buy It.
A Prophet -- Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif. Rated R.
While serving time in a French prison that’s divided between Corsicans and Arabs, Malik (Rahim) murders an inmate at the request of the Corsican leader (Arestrup). This alienates him from the Arabs, but he soon learns he’s not a natural fit with either group. It’s a bit slow developing, but also endlessly fascinating as we watch Malik use his opportune moments, good fortune and prison smarts to take control of his six-year sentence. Winner of nine Cesar Awards (the French Oscars), including Best Picture. Buy It.
