PostHeaderIcon March 2: 2012, Where The Wild Things Are

2012
Starring: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton. Rated PG-13.
The movie: A failed writer (Cusack) tries to keep his ex-wife (Peet) and two children safe as earth destroys itself. The story, directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”), has plenty of disaster movie clichés (martyrs, near escapes, family turmoil, etc.), but it’s also amusing throughout and good popcorn fun. Buy It.

Where the Wild Things Are
Starring: Max Records, Voices of James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara. Rated PG.
The movie: Young Max (Records) gets in a fight with his mother (Catherine Keener) and runs away to an imaginary world of humungous creatures that treat Max as their king. It’s fun to watch Max interact with the creatures, but a story that goes nowhere and builds to nothing makes the movie feel tiresome very quickly. It’s ironic and a bit sad that the best moments come in the first 15 minutes, as Max plays near his home. Based on the beloved children’s book by Maurice Sendak. Rent It.
