Amelia
Starring: Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor. Rated PG.
The movie: The career of famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart (Swank) is chronicled from her first transatlantic flight in 1928 to her disappearance over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. Given that it’s a biopic about someone who broke so many barriers, director Mira Nair’s (“The Namesake”) film is surprisingly dull. Nair deserves credit for mustering tension during the inevitable conclusion, and Swank’s performance is fine, but the tone and quality isn’t that far above a television special. Rent It.
Walk the Line
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Patrick. Rated PG-13.
The movie: The "Man in Black," country music star Johnny Cash, comes to vivid life in this stellar biopic from director James Mangold, who along with Phoenix makes Cash a likable yet highly flawed individual with immense talent. More impressively, Witherspoon sings wonderfully and steals the movie (and won an Oscar for her work) as June Carter Cash, Johnny's wife. Buy It.
Zombieland
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone. Rated R.
The movie: With earth overrun by zombies after a virus wipes out most of humanity, the survivors (Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone and Abigail Breslin) work together to stay alive. You’ll expect the playful violence, but the laugh-out-loud humor may take many by surprise. In fact, this is the best horror-comedy since “Shaun of the Dead” in 2004, which was also about zombies. Buy It.
