Jan. 12: The Hurt Locker, The Simpsons Season 20
The Hurt Locker
Starring: (Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Evangeline Lilly) Rated R.
The movie: Set in Iraq, an Army bomb squad unit cheats death as it tries to disarm dangerous bombs amid the heat and unpredictability of the enemy. Director Kathryn Bigelow superbly directs one of the best movies of the year here, and she deserves the Oscar for best director. She grabs us in the opening scene and never lets up, thanks in large part to the electrically charged performance by Jeremy Renner. This is one of the best movies of 2009, and is not to be missed. Buy It.
The Simpsons: The Complete 20th Season
Starring: (Voices of Julie Kavner, Hank Azaria, Yeardley Smith). Not Rated.
The show: Every episode of the show's historic 20th season is here, but missing are the commentaries and featurettes that made the other Simpson's "Season" DVDs so great to own. Still, there are some good shows here, including "No Loan Again, Naturally," in which Flanders becomes the Simpsons' landlord, and the hilarious "Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D'oh," which follows the family as they move to a more expensive part of town. Rent It.

Hurt Locker You liked this movie more than I did. While all the performances are good (especially Renner's), something in this story failed to grab me. There's something about the characters that I found "inaccessible" for lack of a better word. What's impressive, though, is that a female director helmed this movie. Impressive b/c it's such a masculine, testosterone-driven film. Would vote for Kathryn Bigelow to get best director, but wouldn't root for this to win Best Picture. |
