Is it worth $10? No

“From Paris With Love” goes from the utterly ridiculous to the absurd, but it’s done with a sense of gleeful fun that makes it thoroughly enjoyable. Sure, the story is all over the place and complete nonsense, but darn if John Travolta and the action don’t make the movie work.

The story’s center is James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a hotshot assistant in the office of the U.S. ambassador in Paris. His career is quickly moving forward, as is his personal life with fiancé Caroline (Kasia Smutniak). But when he’s asked to assist special agent Charlie Wax (Travolta) on his latest mission, Reece’s life is thrown into complete chaos.

The plot somehow goes from chasing Chinese drug lords to rooting out terrorist cells, and at no point does it make any sense. But that’s not important in director Pierre Morel’s (“Taken”) film. What is important is the high-octane action, which is frequent and impressive throughout.

Better, Travolta is simultaneously funny and scary as Wax, a loose cannon who’s often right about his hunches. Sporting a baldhead, scarf, goatee and hoop earring, this is Travolta’s most enjoyable performance in years.

Still, it’s hard to say the movie is worth the price of admission given the very inadequate story. If you’re an action junkie, you’ll have a great time. If not, don’t bother.
